This new relationship between Scientology and The Nation of Islam is remarkable given LRH's intense racism and hatred of Black people. How can David Miscavige look Rev. Farrakahan in the eye knowing that Scientology's "sacred scriptures" are full of LRH's racism? David Miscavige has never ordered LRH's racist screeds purged so one must assume that these racist comments do not bother Mr. Miscavige. If they did disturb Mr. Miscavige then why are they still in Scientology scripture? Mr. Miscavige has held absolute ecclesiastical power over Scientology since 1982 and he could have easily had these LRH racist comments removed, and yet he has not chosen to do so these past 24 years. In fact, these comments are still being printed by Scientology in modern editions and in recorded lectures. This is altogether strange considering that Mr. Miscavige has had much of LRH's orignal work deleted, edited, changed, altered, or otherwise squirreled. Why didn't DM purge Hubbard's racist words? And how will DM explain this to the Rev. Farrakahn after I make the Rev. Farrakahn aware of this matter?

I wonder if the Rev. Louis Farrakahn knows of LRH's racist commentaries? We read at the website Scientology and Racism:

Hubbard also found the "insanity rate per capita in South Africa is appalling" and issued a special set of instructions, The Scientific Treatment of the Insane, to South African auditors to address the problem. Note that Hubbard also thinks the Bantu are in need of "rehabilitation", with mental health being only one of the necessary efforts.

The South African Rundown, the only Scientology rundown offsite targeted at a specific ethnic group, was developed for "delivery to South Africans—those who reside in South Africa as well as those who have emigrated to other parts of the world". Hubbard apparently felt they required special processing because they were "untrainable" and "insane".
The Church's auditing tool, the E-meter, requires adjustment in order to accommodate the needle's larger movements because of the intensity of a Bantu's undisclosed transgressions ("withholds").

The Church runs security checks on members suspected of certain criminal behaviors. The Johannesburg Security Check was "the roughest security check in Scientology" and consisted of a series of pointed questions which Scientologists answered while on the E-meter (used in this case not as an auditing tool but as a lie detector). Included in the list of "crimes" is engaging in an intimate relationship with a member of a "colored" race. A selected portion of the questions:

There are hints that Scientology membership was limited to whites, at least initially, in their organizations in southern Africa. In the first quote below, Hubbard is concerned about the World Bank taking control of England and the general advance of Communism. He believes a stronghold of civilization can be set up in Africa to salvage white culture. In the second quote, Hubbard praises the South African organization, that, in spite of the limited white population from which to recruit, managed to outproduce all other Scientology organizations.

First off, Mr. Shabazz, I love your videos, for they are showing me a man, Lance Shabazz, that is very sincere. You're an honest man. You really believe. The problem that I really have with the NOI is their lack of action. Cases in point: 1. The NOI's FOI did nothing when Emmitt Till was murdered in 1955. 2. The NOI's FOI did nothing when the four girls were bombed at church in 1963. 3. The NOI's FOI did nothing when FOI member Ronald Stokes was brutally murdered by the LA devils in 1962. 4. The NOI' FOI always enact NOI justice against turncoats of the NOI e.g., Malcolm X, Leon 4x Ameer, Benjamin Brown, Aubrey Barnett, Hakeem A. Jamal, Hamaas Abdul Khaalis' family in Jan 1973 drowning two infants in a sink and tub, and I could go on and on. There is no history recorded where the NOI enacted revenge on the Devil for his foul treatment of us in this country!! The teachings of THEM are very powerful, but they are all talk with no ACTION!! unless it is against another black person who has grown disillusioned with the lack of action by the NOI.

hey big brother my name is kyre and im 18 years old i am studying @ mosque number 7 in harlem i wanted to know was the harlem mosque the original number 7 or was it moved. Also Brother do the nation of islam still love malcolm x. because it seems as though we are forgeting the work he has done. now im not saying he helped the nation, because the nation also helped him. But he took a stand to try and unite blacks as a whole. as a child i loved malcolm in fact in my opinion he was one of the best speakers in the the nation. see farrakahns mission was different than malcolms was. but he was a student of malcolm so i cant say he is as powerful as malcolm. mr shabazz a brother told me that malcolms past caught up with him. but if thats the reason for his ''actions'' then we all as brothers should prepare for whats cooming to us in the future because we all have bad passess. brother please respond to this message salaam.

Lance Shabazz, where was you in 1977. A F.O.I said he would give up his life for the teaching. When the time came,you were AWOL. Let's see what Silis Muhammad did in 1977. He was in law school at the time. He quit school and went to challenge Wallace. When he arrived on 8/21/77 and went to the Mosque the believers where on the floor praying. He was the only one standing praying in the manner we were taught. A excerpt from the book Hear Silis. Imagine a moment in time. A man is standing in prayer. His hands are outstretched and his head is slighty bowed in the mannner made familiar by the Messenger. Around him is a room full of men and women prostrating themselves in prayer in the manner of the Arab Muslims. The man remains standing while the foreheads of the others touch the floor. How alone he appears. How courageous and sincere.
Wallace had put out that he would meet with anyone. He refuse to meet with him. For the next 30 days he stayed in Chicago. Here Silis Muhammad explain what happen during that time. "At any rate, some of the men I had taught and trained while living in Chicago came by the apartment, one by one, to see me. They were sent, some of them, to see what I was really up to. Each of them that would come by would say "who are you to challenge Wallace Muhammad?" Believe me...they had taken Messenger Muhammad's picture in their homes, and had placed it down here, and had placed Wallace's picture above the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's picture.
Each time I would hear a knock on the door, and I was there alone, not knowing who was on the other side and/or their intent, my heart would race. "Is this one coming to kill me? Is this the one who's going to shoot me? I would open the door. And without sounding like crazy man,or crazier than I am, I believe it was my countenance...I believe it was my presence...I believe it was my state of mind that disarmed those who did have ill intent. And there were a number of them who did come with ill intent. Wali Bahar would later tell me the names of some of them...There was a park right across from the apartment and there were men running about that park and doing their exercise,but they were watching to see who would come and go. After about thirty days of staying in the apartment, Wali Bahar, who was still Personal Captain to Wallace, came to me on a particular day and said "Silis I think you should leave now.

Brother you are doing a great work getting the teachings to the masses. I very much enjoy your reminiscing on the NOI under Mr. Muhammad. However, you do a little too much of that. Speak to the present and future generations with education of Mr. Muhammad. What makes your show and CROE so beneficial is that you allow unfettered discussion on the teachings. You recently offered a great show with Min. Humza Al-Hafeez. I don't know much of the logistics of you show but you should have avoided starting the show until Min. Humza arrived. Furthermore, it was--although inadvertent and without malice--unprofessional to give him less than two minutes. Min. Humza has paid his dues. I thought you offered three terrific topics: (1) What should the emphasis be on Master Fard and if you are a fresh follower of Farrakhan, Silas, Solomon and whomever else what should the emphasis be on the Messenger? (2) What was Muhammad Ali's status in the NOI upon the death of the Messenger? (3) Was Farrakhan the National Spokesperson for the Messenger in the same sense that Malcolm X was the National Spokesperson . . . does is matter? Have Min. Humza return to present his thinking and reasoning again. This is the true value of your show. In closing, Brother please retire the suit. Dress more like Min. Humza (conservative). Peace be unto you

Although you did not ask, I think you should do a show discussing the finances of the NOI under Mr. Muhammad and Min. Farrakhan. Why is there no transparency where the finances are concerned? I have never seen an annual report published by the NOI

Do not stay out of politic, please. It might be your destiny.Just remember who the enemy is. Give Hillary hell, knock her out for Obama. Call her out on her lies. All the disrespectful things she said about Obama is because the man is black. Therefore she is talking about us. Tell your audience how she is playing them. Help me understand.
I am very familiar with Nation of Islam teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Nation of Islam relates to Moorish Supremacy teachings. How could Elijah be prophet of "Allah?"
NOI believes that Allah was actually Wallace Fard Muhammad the founder. Allah is Wallace D? Why worship a man? A European mixed decent man who believes that black men and women are superior in the world. Isn't that contradictory?
Savior's day is revolved around him? What did he "Save" you from?
Malcolm X realized that Elijah Muhammad was not the real deal. He said that in his last speeched before assassinated.
You guys remade Orthodox Islam.

In that righteous endeavour few things have helped me more than your videos and commentary on the Nations past and present. As I believe I have told you before I don't live near a mosque so the information and training I miss out on is truly a shame. For the record, I actually know brother Lance Shabazz casually. I often saw him when I was selling the Final Call. He is a sincere brother. What I disagreed with him on, I sent a private message to him about it a little over a month ago.

Show's 101 and 102 were excellent. The shows definitely in my opinion highlighted the hurt, pain, and confusion in the minds of the believers from 2/26/75 probably right on up to the mid eighties. I will be honest I have problems with those believers that came up under Farrakhan, Silas, Solomon, John, etc.. when they bash those believers who were in the ranks prior to Saviour's Day 75. What those people had to experience was very traumatic and loyalties were put to the test to say the least. A classic example was Capt. Shah who was a loyal follower of the HEM but he as did most followed the Imam, not because they believed but out of loyalty to the memory/family of the HEM. I know to many that would sound confusing but from what I know and have heard from believers who were in the ranks at that time(2/75). I think both had valid points. But I don't like to criticize soldiers like (Shah, Ramza, etc..) for their actions at that time

I find it very conspicuous that these discussions on your program often times fail to cite any scripture. Since we write the history in advance, why do you attempt to tell the story using only "anecdotes" and "conjecture", creating a recipe for slander and slack talk

Today, the NOI is webcasting a speech the Minister is delivering on education. The webcasting from my vantage point is a disaster. I have trying repeatedly to log on to the webcast with absolutely no success. The Final Call is very inept when it comes to internet technology. This has happened repeatedly when dealing the the Final Call and their webcast products. Also, the Final Call has yet to integrate Macs in their internet technology. This is frustrating and it suggest to me that the NOI is still doing things based on favoritism, not capability. It also appears that the NOI is more interested in making a buck than first getting the technology correct. With all the personnel at the Final Call, I simply expect more.
Bro. Lance perhaps you can volunteer your services (because you know they won't pay you). Only non-believers can charge the NOI for their services. But then again I could be wrong and just talking nonsense. I hope the Minister's speech on education is relevant and pertinent. I have not heard the Minister give a good speech since 1991.

Speaking for myself I know its times when I am searching to see if you have uploaded the next show just out of anticipation. Keep up the good work brother your efforts are definitely not in vain. I was talking with a brother by the name of Hasain Ali and he received his X in 1958. He told me he knows of your show and that you have spoken with him. I would like to congratulate you on the good work you are doing on the “Lance Shabazz” show. It seems your programs continue to get better each time I view them. I have been especially appreciative of some of your most recent shows, particularly the one dealing with the topic of whether or not the Messenger is still alive. I think you did a fine job of putting that falsehood to rest.
It is true that Jabril Muhammad and Minister Louis Farrakhan are the authors that lie and the spreading of that untruth, but the question is, and the one you asked in one of your broadcast, is why? Why would Jabril Muhammad and Minister Farrakhan claim that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is still alive we they know it’s false?
In other interesting and thought provoking shows you did, such as the ones covering the death of Imam Wallace D. Mohammed, as well as your most recent interview with Minister John Muhammad. Unfortunately he must have missed your show about the Messenger being alive because from what I'm told, he believes the Messenger is still alive.
In light of aforementioned shows you have broadcasts and the range topics you have covered in them, there is but one major topic I believed you haven't covered enough, that is the role of the Honorable Silis Muhammad (the Spiritual Son of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad) and the second resurrection of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam.
He was the first to stand after the destruction or fall of the Nation of Islam. It was on August 21, 1977 that Mr. Silis Muhammad left Los Angeles on plane to Chicago with a letter in his declaring spiritual war on Imam Wallace D. Muhammad (see attachment). He risked his life to restore the Nation of Islam, the image of the Messenger and Master Fard Muhammad.
As you may well know and as John Muhammad testified to, that was a very dangerous thing to do, challenge the hegemony and power of Wallace D. Mohammed over the Nation of Islam. Many of the biggest, toughest, fire and brimstone teaching minister did not have the will or fortitude to challenge the chief hypocrite, including John Muhammad. Neither did the mighty FOI, lead by their captains, do anything to prevent the conquest of the Nation of Islam.
I watched you question John Muhammad on show# 116 part 3 I believe, on how could ministers like him and others sit by allow the Nation of Islam of to be ransacked and toppled by disbeliever like Wallace D. Mohammed. I paid careful attention to his response. Minister John Muhammad was correct when he stated that the fall of the Nation of Islam was divinely ordained to fall, it is true that the Messenger said it fall and rise again. However, it doesn't excuse him and others like for not standing up to Wallace.
At least the record would have shown that he stood up against the power of the chief hypocrite and that would prove his belief in the Messenger and love of the black holy righteous nation.
The fall of the Nation of Islam was in fact a judgment and trial for the followers of the Messenger. Allah used Wallace D. Muhammad as instrument of divine judgment. Because of Wallace’s work we can clearly distinguish the hypocrites, disbelievers and wrongdoers from the true believers in the Messenger. The Messenger knew full well what Wallace was going to do (destroy the Nation of Islam), however he still allowed him to return to good standing inside of the Nation of Islam. You know this history better than I do; you have great supply and collection of history.
There is no God but man; it was man a son of a man that caused us rise and a son of a man that caused us to fall. Many of the followers were caught off guard by Wallace; I believe Minister John Muhammad alluded to that on your show. That fact is also in accordance with the prophecies, Matthew (chapter. 25 v. 43-44)
“ But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh”
As the prophecies foretold the triar would come as thief, you would not see him coming and therefore you would be caught off guard and your belief tried.
At the time Silis Muhammad stood to resurrect the Nation of Islam and the teachings of the Messenger, Minister Farrakhan was with Wallace D. Muhammad helping him tear down the Nation of Islam. After Silis stood, about 3-4 months later Farrakhan announced that he was going to return to the teachings of the Messenger and rebuild the Nation of Islam.
It’s that part of the history of the Nation of Islam that’s not being told by some. Today we must tell the whole truth, all of the story, no matter how it cuts. We must put truth before self and everything else. The time is at hand, the fall of America is here and her destruction is right around the corner.
The dark period is over and dead the will hear the truth or perish. The elect will see and hear the man of truth that’s been calling them for over 30 years. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

- I read somewhere or heard it in London as well (though I am not sure about it) that Min.Jeremiah Shabazz was a FBI agent too and so was Abdul Basit Naeem.
- What is the difference in claiming that God made himself flesh in Jesus Christ and Allah came in the person of Master Fard Muhammad. Did not we run away from christianity to reject antromorphism?

Peace be with you Mr.Shabbazz. I am not a muslim but I agree with many of the views of Mr. Muhammad. I just want you to know how thankfull I am that you are doing these shows. I have had family members involved with farrakhan and I have seen firsthand how they dedicated themselves and all their time and monies to him.I also witnessed how when they needed help in their marriages and just general life how they were left out in the cold.
I think farrakhan is negligent and careless with his followers. He talks good but I saw my youngest brother destroyed by them.He used to be a pastor in the Nation and they never did anything to help him. He was sent to a city to pastor and they did nothing but badger him for money while they never gave him much financial help much less a salary.
My brother always wanted to be a follower of Muhammad since 1976 as far as I can remember.We thought he was crazy at the time he joined in 83-84 but it seemed to help him get himself together.
After the Million Man March he was all over the news media and being threatened with death from racist whites and being followed around by the FBI.Our family was kinda scared of him but we still tried to be there for him. We didnt know what he was going through because he never spoke about it or complained to anyone.farrakhan and his people never once lifted a finger to help my brother. We are now finding out things 13 years after it all went down.
Mr. Shabbazz what got me hooked on your shows was when you called out one of farrakhans top people for using you and abandoning you after he was satisfied. Left you stranded somewhere without a plane ticket or something. You and my brother have a lot in common, in that respect.
He told me recently that the few times anyone came in his few years of pastoring it was to badger them for money and just generally to berate the few followers for not doing enough and raising money.
I am still very angry about it because I thought my brother was doing ok in the Nation but little did we know how much hell he was going through with these unscrupulous people.
We saw our baby brother on CNN and 60 Minutes and heard him on the radio all over the country back in 96-97.And we thought he was making money and doing well but just about a week ago my mother told me that he was living in poverty and getting his lights cut off and just struggling hard.She said that he lived in the winter without heat for at least a couple months. We were not raised like that. We are an average black family with a strong work ethic so this is puzzling that one of my brothers would go thru such indignities for someone like farrakhan.
The straw that broke the camels back was when farrakhan finally came to speak in his city they had removed him as the minister and pushed him to the side and ignored him
all because they found 20 bucks inside a receipt for donations that was under a stack of paper in his office.He was labeled a thief and fired for mismanaging funds.My brother is no thief he gave his all to farrakhan and when that bastard came to speak he had dinner with all of the people who opposed my brother and humiliated him in front of the whole city by not even allowing him to sit on stage behind the man for who he had worked so hard.
So thank you Mr. Shabbazz. Im just venting because Im retired now and I know how tough it is out there and my brother basically had to start over his life after over twenty years foolin around with farrakhan.They left him broke. He didnt used to be broke before foolin with the Nation. They even started calling him and warning him not to be like Malcolm X. Some top people apparently wanted him to be silent. He just got quiet and we couldnt find him for several years. We were worried until he just resurfaced recently.

Your last three series of show were long time coming. You told Bro. Capt. Alpha Farrakhan that he is in better shape than the Nation (by Nation I don't only mean Farrakhan's Nation, but the whole Nation of Islam how profess to follow the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad). Why? How did things get so bad.
In the Alpha interview, as a person not married to someone in the NOI, I wondered why did Alpha take Betsy Farrakhan's last name. What happen to the brotherhood? The same thing happened to Captain Shah, which you discussed on other shows. Why is it that Wallace was able to break powerful Ministers across the country down to wimps? The truth is that today the current crop of Ministers could be broken down too and some have. Where is the independence? Why should you invest and divest your all only to be exploited. In closing about the brotherhood, something else you said that jumped out at me: why are the ministers and laborers coveting each others daughters? This is insane. Where is the brotherhood? Who can you trust in the end of your days. No one wants to be a Captain Shah or Alpha. Think about it.
As for Moreen's plight, words cannot not express the total disappointment that is Royale. He really had me going, only to be discovered as a fraud. Bro. Lance, the teaches are only as strong as the men who say they embody the teachings. If the men are hypocrites, frauds and charlatans, the teaches are still pure. However, the question remain what do you do with the hypocrites who seek to destroy the reputation of the teachings through their need for sex, vanity, greed and even worse full and complete replacements for Allah and his Messenger.
Bro. Lance I commend you on your good works. You are presenting the glass of dirty water. Without the truth and I know you hold back, the people would be lost and never found.

My sister is one of Royalls wives. I'm not sure if you know this or not, but yesterday, Moreen was found dead. I'm still waiting to hear more facts. This makes no sense. How interesting is it that Royall calls you up, upset about Moreen commig on your show and exposing him, and telling the truth, just last week, ...and yesterday she is gone???? Something isnt right. Something needs to be done about him. My sister just had Royals child last month, and I havent heard anything. I dont know if she is ok,....is My sister in good health????? I've called over and over and got no answer. I dont have much of a realationship with my sister, and Royal has turned her againsed my mother. HER OWN MOTHER! She wont even talk to her. If you remembered in the past, I asked you if you had heard that min.Farrakhan had white members and you told me you would check into it. Well, I see that he, Farrakhan, admitted that they had indeed white members who follow the teachings in his October 19, 2008 message. I know now, for a fact, that this negro has lost his damn mind.
I hear too, that he had negros in Temple # 2, I hate the mosque Maryam name, on October 19, 2008 singing gosple music. I have further heard from a good source that they expect that anyday they expect Farrakhan to denounce Islam and announce to the World that he was now a Christian. You do not have to response to this message. I know you are a business brother and I am not trying to bring any complaints or disappointments about Farrakhan to your doorstep.
When you stated (show #125, part 4) that Bro. Khalid confided in you that Dr. Alim pushed him and scolded him for causing trouble for the Minister, I was deeply upset and definitely surprised by Dr. Alim’s conduct and had to retrace in my mind if there was anytime where there was some jealously or envy coming from the ministers towards each other.
I remember when Khalid went to jail in ’87 or ’88 for some foolishness in Atlanta and not long after that Dr. Alim rose to become Farrakhan’s national spokesman replacing Khalid. I think it is safe to say that some in the Nation thought that Khalid’s conduct was an embarrassment to the Nation and the Minister.
When Khalid leaves jail and is named Farrakhan’s National Assistant he quickly resumes his position as the second most sought after speaker in the Nation on college campuses and Afrocentric functions. I wonder if Khalid felt he deserved to resume his position as National Spokesman. Also, brother Lance while Khalid was in good standing he made several speeches in the mid-Atlantic region (particularly DC), but you will not find one event where Khalid and Alim shared the diaz and this is before Kean College.
Your comments about the current stock of ministers will unfold to the hilt once the Minister’s successor is named and there is a hard scramble for leadership. You are definitely correct for honoring Minister Karriem for his contributions in the early days, but in the late eighties and early nineties most of the powerful ministers and captains came from Mosque #4 under Alim’s service (Abdul Arif, Conrad, Jamil, Min. Anthony in Memphis, Capt. William, etc.). I believe though cannot prove one hundred percent but I guarantee that besides Farrakhan the minister’s turn to Alim for leadership.
To be honest brother, I think Khalid’s respect in the upper echelon of the Nation had diminished primarily because of Khalid’s boldness and resurgence of the million more movement (million man march sellout) combining the Nation, civil rights has been and never beens and Rev. Moon’s church. Khalid just did not fit anymore and Khalid's love came from the rank and file. In the end Khalid’s cohorts were not the Fruit, but college students who sought him out, former gang bangers, new Black Panther Party and Afrocentric/Black Nationalist chic crowd. Sometimes, I ask beyond the rank and file Fruit did Khalid have a friend in the Nation?

Dear Brothers Lance Shabazz and Fellow members of CROE
In view of the most recent passing of Imam Wallace/Warith D. Mohammed both shows Muhammad and Friends and the Lance Shabazz Show have dealt with or spent sometime discussing the history of Wallace D. Muhammad and his impact upon the Nation of Islam. In some manner or another both shows have taken steps to explain how Imam Wallace D. Muhammad brought about the downfall of the Nation of Islam. Both shows have gone forth to show, emphatically and in no uncertain terms, that Wallace/Warith D. Muhammad was a hypocrite.
In addition to your shows there has been much discussing around the Internet concerning the history Wallace D Muhammad, from orthodox Muslims to former followers of the Messenger. Some arguing back forward, whether nor Wallace D. Muhammad should viewed as positive figure in history of a negative one.
Many of the followers of the Messenger's teachings would argue that Imam Wallace/Warith D. Mohammed was a negative one, as being the ultimate hypocrite. The Messenger's followers have been fixed and most resolute and showing that Wallace/Warith D. Mohammed was a hypocrite and committed a great malfeasance and damage to the Nation of Islam.
Having said that, I have some questions that I would like ask you , that I believe should be addressed in a future show, are:
1) Considering the fact that, according to historical accounts, Imam Wallace/Warith D. Mohammed was kicked out of the Nation of Islam as many 3 or 4 times and allowed to return, why would the Messenger of Allah, knowing full well his disbelief allow him back into good standings in the Nation of Islam?
2) Isn't it also true that in 1974, or about 6 months before the passing of the Messenger, Wallace D. Muhammad (giving his history of a mischief maker inside of the Nation of Islam) was reinstated back to good standing inside of the Nation of Islam?
3) Did the Messenger reinstate Wallace back into Nation of Islam prior to his passing or was it the holy family?
4) Who had the power while the Messenger was still alive, particularly someone with the stature of Wallace D. Muhammad, to place him in bad standings with the Nation of Islam and the power reinstate to good standings? I ask that questions because it was stated that the Messenger had grown senile nearing his last days, which would gives an inference that he was not of sound mind or not capable of making sound decisions. A decision such as allowing his hypocritical son back into the Nation of Islam.
Here is an excerpt from a piece that PBS did on Wallace D. Muhammad that relates to the discussion at hand.
5) Do you agree with all or in part of the facts cited in this PBS piece.? Was he allowed to teach in the temples? If so, did you attend any of Wallace's temple lectures and if you can remember, what was he teaching?
6) I read that Wallace/Warith D. Mohammed, upon his return to that Nation of Islam in 1974 was made Supreme Minister, to your knowledge is that true? If so, who elevated him to Supreme Minister?
7) If you were in the Nation of Islam, I believe based what I've heard, that you were both followers inside of that Nation of Islam in the year of 1974, what was your feelings or reaction to the reinstatement of Wallace D. Muhammad back into the Nation of Islam?
8) On the CROE homepage you said the following: "There are many followers of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who were a part of the first resurrection (as it is called) who were deeply effected by the games Wallace Mohammed has played as well as Minister" Please explain what you meant by games, can give examples?
If you have any recordings, audio or visual, or any letter correspondence from the Messenger to his Son Wallace that you can refer me to that gives a justification as to why the Messenger allowed his son back into the Nation of Islam would be most appreciated.
Please forgive me if my questions seem repetitive, too broad, burdensome or too time consuming as I know you are very busy and may not have time to respond to questions from someone you don't know over the Internet.

I'd like to share, that I have come to realize that when grief is the freshest, words should be the fewest. For the first couple of years after my horrifying experiences in the Nation of Islam, I went to the trash dump nightly to rid myself of grief. Recently, at my newest place the trash dump has been closed at night because so many people were encountering less than desirable people who were posing a serious threat, but I believe, if there is a God, that God was protecting me when I was making my trips. By going there to grieve, I was able to come back and face so many proclaimed believers in God/Islam who were spouting little spiritual platitudes that didn't work for me.
How do you dump your cup of grief?

Look brothers and sisters, it does seem a little confusing where the brother Lance Shabazz is coming from with his comparing of the two men, one being from the religious sector and one being from the political sector. Remember satin controls both arenas. Satin was behind Wallace in deceiving our people using him as a willing participant and now he's behind Obama using him as a willing participant in deceiving our people once again. Wallace revealed the hypocrite in his time and Obama is revealing the hypocrite today. Lance is pointing out how so called believers of yesterday went with Wallace throwing their support behind him not knowing that they were setting us back as a people 30 to 40 years – so it is today with those who throw their support behind Obama, we again will find ourselves deceived/disappointed and set back.
Lance's show is primarily for the followers of the THEM; he is speaking directly to those who understand what America is and to those who understand what the Messenger taught in reference to this wicked ass nation. 3. The Corporation is owned and everything above and below the land of the Americas belongs to the international banking cartel of Lord D Rothschild. If you question the validity of what I am sharing with you, do your own research and you will find the truth for yourself. Located in Europe in what is called The City in London, like the Vatican in Rome and the District of Columbia here in the US, this is how this three-headed monster controls the entire planet – for these are all independent sovereign entities that operate outside of the laws of the land. Rothschild and Zionist leaders of Israel are the brains of this three-headed beast.
4. The owners of the corporations (the board) are always the ones to choose the CEO of the corporation – so it is with the (president) CEO of these United States of America. Obama is nothing more than a CEO who answers to the board not the employee/citizens of the United States.
Make no mistake about these facts that I stated above, and make no mistake about the fact that Obama is fully aware of these facts. Obama is a willing participant in this deception. No president is ignorant to the facts that I stated above – for he had to interview for the job just like any CEO who aspires to work in this capacity. This is why I said that Obama is no different than Wallace; just like Wallace, Obama is fully aware of what his expected of him by his handlers. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Now ask yourself the question, are you one who really just want a spot at the table or are you one who wants to destroy the table. No one can change this wicked system – for it is 100% wicked and there is no righteousness in it. The die is set and there is nothing that can stop her ultimate destruction – absolutely nothing.

I received some very wise words from a Minister. He said, words to this effect, that "...Nelson Mandela became President, but the people's condition did not change. They still live in those 'shanty houses'! The S. African people at least deserve to receive brand new schools and brand new homes. In effect, Nelson Mandela is just a "symbolic" President, one with no real power to change the condition of his people."

Friends and supporters of the Iraqi resistance,
The story of Abraham’s attempt to sacrifice his son in obedience to his God, according to Jewish and non-Jewish contemporary archeologists and historians, is a myth, one of the many Jewish inventions.
Nevertheless, Saddam Hussein’s sacrifice of his two sons, grandson, family members, and his own life in the Mother of all Battles that the United States, with all its destructive power, cannot end, is real not fiction. Hundreds of millions throughout the world saw him walking to the gallows, calm, composed, with his head up high and defiant. That day was and is the true Eid of Sacrifice. We Palestinians honor and celebrate his great memory on this day. It gave us pride and hope, and strengthened our determination to continue the march. Victory is on the horizon.
Saddam loved Palestine and we loved Saddam. Had he betrayed Palestine and the Palestinians, Saddam would have been alive today. He would be joining President Mubarak of Egypt, King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia, and King Abdallah II of Jordan in the American Zionist conspiracy and attempt to crush the Palestinians.
I wish I am with you in person as you gather to commemorate the life of Saddam Hussein. It is a great honor. Unfortunately, I cannot. I have been pinned down day and night to satellite TV. Jewish controlled American media, which blame the victims, would not dare bring the terrifying pictures that I have been seeing. I have been watching live the bloodbath and the holocaust being inflicted on the helpless people of Gaza. I have been watching American weapons of mass destruction in action. I have been watching the F16’s, the Apache helicopters, and gun boats dropping the most destructive bombs, Israel’s Christmas and New Year’s fireworks, on people who have no means to reach them. I have been watching body parts of men, women and children scattered in the streets and pulled from underneath the rubble. I have been watching Israeli rockets targeting apartment buildings, homes, schools, universities, mosques, clinics, and even ambulances. The Islamic University, the oldest and largest scientific complex in Gaza, was hit and destroyed a couple days ago. Today, Dar al-Arqam, a highly respected private school, received the same fate. Arab educational institutions, according to American and Israeli leaders, are legitimate targets. They produce “terrorists”.
One of the most moving experiences that made me cry was a “speech” delivered by a 5 year old Palestinian girl standing in her destroyed bedroom in the midst of her shattered dolls, and torn and burned clothes. “Where are we going to sleep?”, she wondered. “EVEN I was terrified,” she added. The word, EVEN, coming from an innocent pretty little girl, who thinks of herself to be strong and brave, is making my heart traumatized with pain. I am certain, this girl, if she survives the massacre carried out by the “fourth-military-power” in the world, will, in a few years, become a “terrorist” leader. Seriously, her speech, her logic, her tone of voice, and her hands’ gesture, were more effective than those of Barak Obama, who inspired millions of people worldwide. Of course, unlike the U.S. President-elect, it is doubtful that Westerners will ever hear her, since she is a Palestinian, an Arab and a Muslim.
What hurts me the most is the fact that I can only watch the bloodbath, the genocide and the holocaust the helpless and defenseless Palestinians are subjected to. Bush designated Palestinian charitable institutions which assist orphans and widows as terrorist organizations. Aiding those institutions is punishable by long term jail sentences. Gaza has been under Israeli military siege for many months. Civilians are denied all basic requirements of life, food, drinking water, medicine, electricity and fuel.
Ironically, President-elect Obama has been having a good time in Hawaii. He pretends to be deaf and blind. Those who expected change from Obama may soon be disappointed. Unless he speaks out and take positive and courageous steps against occupation, oppression and genocide, Obama will soon be next to Bush, a mass murderer and war criminal, in history books. Silence is complicity.
Five days have passed and none of Israel’s objectives have been realized. Palestinian will to resist will not be broken. Palestinian resistance has made it clear; no negotiations will be considered until aggression is completely stopped; unless the siege of Gaza is fully lifted; and unless the people of Gaza exercise their right to move, travel and trade freely and have communication with the outside world. Gaza is the most densely area in the world. One and a half million Palestinians live in 150 square miles. More than 500 targets were indiscriminately hit and destroyed. All-out-starvation has not worked. All-out-war will also fail. Palestinians are fighting back. Their homemade rockets, though small and primitive, have forced almost one million Jewish settlers to hide in shelters. Remember that the settlements Palestinians hit, are towns and villages from which they were forcefully evicted by Jewish gangs, robbers and bandits.
Israel was defeated in Southern Lebanon in July of 2006. Certainly, Israel will be defeated in Gaza. Victory of the oppressed will prevail. We see it now in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Saddam is satisfied, contented and at peace in his grave.

I have a question on when Malcolm first went to the Middle East. I believe that I read or heard
that the experience he wrote in his letter about (Blue eyed Muslims etc) was not his first experience
with "Middle Eastern" Muslims
Did he travel with the Messanger in 1959 or prior to writing his letter back home?
I've always felt that the book written by Alex Haley had an agenda which still fools the blind deaf and dumb

I must say I have never heard of you before until I went on Youtube and seen
one of your shows. I was very impress and think your doing a very good job
informing people about the History of The Nation Of Islam. Its good to have a

I'm writing you as I did Croe have you did a show talking about The domestic
life of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad? If yes is it on YouTube? The reason why I
asked, because its certain members of the Farrakhan Factor site that said The
Messenger never had wives. One siter said that Ishmael was Emmanuel's son and
Rasul was a Christian minister son. She even posted a clip of your show with
Emmanuel on as proof. Then she went on to say that u have to asked Tynetta
family in Detrot and they can back up her claims. Do you know of Tynetta or
Emmanuel ever been given time out before? I'm very curious to know because I
don't like when people spread nasty rumors just to be doing it. I want to know

While in California in August of 1969, I was at Disneyland one night when Joe Tex performed at the Coca-Cola pavillion. Opening for Joe was a band called Checkmates, LTD. What a night of Incredible music! One I'll always remember!
I don't think Buddy Killen ever got near enough credit as the positively fantastic R&B producer he really was... and I think Joe Tex's latter day big pop chart breakthroughs like 'I Gotcha' and 'Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)' overshadow what a major, major talent he was... like I pointed out over on The B Side a while back, Joe was the brightest star on the Soul Clan single when it was released in 1968... I think the fact that he died over 25 years ago also lends to his continued under-appreciation. Thanks, Todd! Here's what Chips told Allen Smith; "Joe Tex was an unbelievable talent. He was a great songwriter but he couldn't play an instrument. He'd have all these songs that he knew the words to but no one knew the chords! He would just stand there and sing a cappella. Usually Bobby Emmons would sit there for an hour or so on every song and put some chord changes to what Joe had. And then we'd just take it from there. Cause Joe would have all these things in his head but he didn't exactly know how to get them out. But he was brilliant. He was one of the most brilliant recording artists I've ever known." I enjoyed this episode brother, you know I was at 7c Mosque as a child
about 13 years old when Joe tex was doing a fund raiser for the Most
Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I gave my last 50 cents that I was saving
for a bean pie, when I told Joe tex that he gave me 10 dollars that

Brother, You are doing a "mighty work"! I am somewhat torn. You know what I mean. I have been around the NOI much of my life. I knew the late Minister Kenneth (Murray)Muhammad and his wife, Sister Margarette Rose (Murray)Muhammad of Temple or Mosque 34 of Durham, NC. I graduated from kindergarten in their school in 1975. Although I was 5 years old, I remember the changes. Minister or Imam Kenneth Muhammad still played the tapes of the Messenger after he, The Messenger, passed. Brother Kenneth still loved the Messenger even when Wallace broke up the Nation. He was torn as well as many others. A psychosis of some sort set in on many of the believers. Diet and health went to hell! I see it in old Brothers. Diabetes, heart disease and arthritis to name a few. Terrible! Now back to me, I first heard the Teachings of Messenger Muhammad in the 1970s, however I was just a little to young to join the Nation b ut I would listen to Messenger Muhammad on the radio on Sunday nights in my mother`s kitchen while she was upstairs in her bedroom. I finished high school in 1976 by that time the Nation and the Messenger was gone. I went away to college and got a taste of Sunni Islam but it was not like what I saw in Philadelphia in the early 70`s, so I finished college in 1980 and in 1980 I heard Minister Louis Farrakhan speaking on the radio WHAT in Philadelphia and at that point I knew that I had found that Islam from the 70`s. So I went in search of the Mosque in Philadelphia and I joined right away and became a solider for Messenger Muhammad I rose through the ranks pretty quickly held the posts of Secretary, Lieutenant and Investergator. I met some wonderful people while in that organization and had some wonderful friendships from about 1981 to 1990 I served my Nation well so I thought, I was once asked by Minister Louis Farrakahan to be a Minister for him and that e wanted to teach me, but you know that lesson that says can the devil fool a Muslim, well at that time I had been through some things in that organization that my nature told me that it was time that I began to seek the Messenger for myself, little did I know that I would be were I am today. In 1990 I heard that a man named Minister Jermiah Shabazz was teaching at a local Y.M.CA and he was a Minister for The Messenger of Allah. Well I went to see that man and I talked with that man and I joined on with that man because he said that he loved and knew and was taught by the Messenger well Minister Jeremiah saw in me that I had love for Allah and his messenger and that I had the gift of speech and he allowed me to become one of his Assistant Minister`s and I held that post under him from 1990 until he made his transition. I love Minister Jeremiah for what he taught me of the Messenger himself and the Nation. And through Minister Jeremiah I was able to learn and study under Minister Theordore Hamzah, Secretary John Ali and Minister John Muhammad during the time of the Council of Elders. Twelve years ago myself and some wonderful belivers attempted to help the Messenger of Allah in this great endevor so here we are again back together united seasoned mature and ready and In The Name of Master Fard Muhammad and The Honorable Elijah Muhammad we will die on our post doing our job of saving our people. In the Most Holy Name of Allah, God, Master Fard Muhammad, and in the name of His Last Messenger and true Apostle, the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad... As-Salaam-Alaikum Brother Shabazz, As a newer member of the Nation of Islam who has come into knowledge of self after 1975, I am interested in finding out where I can join up with those who are active in implementing what was taught by the Last Messenger of Allah. What I mean by implementing is who and where are those who are building a safe haven for our sons and daughters? We as members of the Nation know that the nation requires both the man and the woman to partake of the spiritual knowledge and then execute that which has been ingested to reveal the true knowledge of Allah, Master Fard Muhammad. In other words, something that can be seen as a reflection of the love of self. As talk is cheap. What else have you got. (not toward you) When the Arab, African, and Latino men look around themselves they see a need for their women and children and then meet those needs. I am interested in finding out where the believers are who are dong something that reflects the knowledge. When an Arab man comes to America he looks around and says I don't eat what they sell. I must provide food for myself, my wife and our children. Then he works toward a store that another Arab can see and know where he can purchase clean food for himself and family. The followers of the Messenger (Elijah Muhammad) are supposed to do the same. See that your family can not eat what they sell and provide yourself, wife and children with clean food. And there are so many other needs as well. I am interested in finding where there are actual reflections of what our Messenger taught. I want to do my part and put into practice what our Beloved Messenger taught us. There is no profession of perfection here. I pray to Allah Master Fard Muhammad that I will have done far more good than bad before I leave this earth. I have made some very bad decisions and extremely bad choices. As have so many of our brothers and sisters, but we strive each and every day to make our way to the righteousness that our God and Messenger have given to us. Although I have been on record with more than one brother or sister as a complainer, fault finder and so on. I must say that as a sister who has studied the Messenger's teachings I find it most inspiring and motivating to see brothers stand up as you are doing. And I have comitted myself to finding all of the good and right that I can in my breatheren. It comes very natural to us as sisters when we see our BlackMen standing up doing that which is needed instead of being professors of knowledge and having built absolutly nothing. What good is it for a man to go to school for forty or more years and sit around talking about what he knows and has studied yet has built no safe haven for his own sons? Mere knowledge goes for naught if not put into practice. Is this not what our Beloved Messenger taught? So if you have studied the teachings then show me what you have built. Where are the schools for education of a Nation? Where do you purchase your food? Where is your food grown? Where do you and your families live? Is it a safe neighborhood? Is there drugs and guns all around your women and children? Can a brother in Islam see your light? Back in the fifties and sixties you could see these things all around you and the rest of the world was in awe. Shouldn't you be doing more than just saying I have the lessons? So then what are the lessons for? Are your sons and daughters able to look around and say this is for us? Today as we look around we see the knowledge of Yacoob swallowing up our children. This is not right! The Wisdom of Master Fard Muhammad is Greater than Yacoob's. If we practice Righteousness and not tricknology then no laws of power can be implemented on us or our children. Our Nattion is falling into the hands of the hypocrite and the disbeliever of Islam. How can we have a nation without coming together for the good and teaching love of self not muredrous madness as tricknology requries. You can not be a righteous man and order the death of your brother. You can not fool Allah. Nor can you fool a true believer of Allah. When you kill your brother you kill yourself. In order for Islam and taught by the Most Honroable Elijah Muhammad to live we who believe in it must not kill one another for the sake of Yacoob's knowledge, which the only approval you will ever get for such behavior. The Scientists saw no end to His Wisdom, so to style yourself as Wise and a General there must be evidence to support this, but as the Messenger taught, what would another one teach you? We only need to echo the Teachings and practice the Program.
It is only the Son of Man who controls who lives and who perishes.
All you had to do was be a faithful and parrot of the Teachings of the Messenger. This is not an insult but a high compliment to anyone who maintains fidelity to the Teachings from God Himself against the onslaught of the forgetful, silly, and jealous orthodox muslims, and the Devil.

So under your leadership, instead of making me study the Messenger I spent countless hours trying to grasp your new teachings in the series, "Self Improvement the Basis for Community Development", oh, and the Number 19 as if I were in seminary school. It was sterile and non life giving and I faded. I probably would have fought the good fight if the Teaching remained consistent. I don't know for sure. But those endless Bible verses were not helpful. Young people have to be put to work to see how you grow and nurture business and self independence. I went from Muslim novice to Christian theology scholar. Definately not what I signed up for.
What I should have been studying is what Master Fard Muhammad instructed, not your revamped version of the wheel.
What MFM gave Elijah in 3.5 years lasted Elijah 44 years. How then do you stand up in 1977 or '78 and switch out teachings a few years later. You didn't re-capture what was squandered and given away by Wallace.
Until you could match the Messenger, all you had to do was aide us in catching up to where the NOI left off.
Orthodox Muslims. Their non-acceptance of Master Fard Muhammad and Elijah is of no consequence; they control nothing in Allah's heaven and earth.
Ramadan is in December. Allah did not give you Authority to Change or Alter what He deemed appropriate for the Black people in America in terms of fasting from spending, drinking, and hog eating all in the name of a righteous prophet Jesus in the month of December.
Bro. how were you able to embrace and praise Wallace Deen when he sent you and a whole generation of our people back to the vomit of spirit worship, forbidding the Messengers books, sending us into empty rituals, dependancy, and seeking nearness to our open enemies of 400 years? But even more important, how do you embrace someone who tried nearly all his life to humiliate and hurt the man giving life to the dead Black Nation and gave life to You? Allah does not love His Enemies. Are you more magnanimous than Allah? Of course not, so you embraced Wallace Deen for a reason known only in your bosom.
Wallace never recanted or asked forgiveness.
Why are there no articles in your Final Call examining The Time? The Son of Man?
Do you not care you are aiding in Depriving Black people the knowledge of Self, God Allah and the Devil though you have a medium to educate Black people about Elijah?
Do you realize by omitting the Base Teachings that God is a Man and not a Spook, and the caucasian is the Devil who continues to visit horrific Evils upon the defenseless Black People, you are complicit in sheparding the Black people of America to Destruction?

If Allah is indeed Oft-Returning to Mercy, than by making me to know the the Coalition for the Remembrance of Elijah (C.R.O.E)is that mercy to me. Now, I do not know how my story will end, but I do know I haven't felt the Spirit of the Messenger until CROE. They are the archive for the history of the NOI and an institution of Higher Learning.
I've been "processing". What this means is CROE insists that our people need to know Elijah's Teachings to the fullest.
They promote Black people having a direct relationship with the Teachings without anyone's slant, bent, interpretation, or coloring.
They remove conscious and unconscious barriers that would interfere with getting the Root knowledge, the Teachings.
This includes personality worship or depending on a personality to give the teachings life to a student.
It's like the old Kung Fu t.v series, when Kane could walk across the rice paper without tearing it, he could rely on his own base of knowledge to be self-guided for the remainder of his life.
CROE promotes the Messengers teachings just as He gave it for 44 years.
Its been a quite a journey but I have gotten you, dear heart, Bro. Farrakhan out of my system, and now see the Messenger and Master Fard Muhammad as the sole repository of light, truth, and Real Love.
I missed an opportunity to learn the Messenger when I was an impressionable teen under your direction.
With CROE I get that chance to learn again.
The Messenger said on 11/11/62 that the Devil would have a hard time trying to extinguish this teaching, "from the East coast to the Gulf coast, to the West coast round the boarder of Canady, you will find little Elijah's".
C.R.O.E. is a little Elijah.
I want to be a little Elijah. My own independent self. So I study Elijah as I've never done before.

Brother I was looking forward to this gathering of great minds and it even exceeded my high expectations! I was wondering if you could help me out. I don't have a copy of How to Eat live, so I can't really research this myself. I was wondering though if you could pass on to Bro. Tarif, or the Sister two questions I have. The questions is as follows:
1) I'm trying to incorporate more fruit in my diet on a daily which now consists of 2 apples and 2 oranges, but I'm unable to eat this in one sitting, nor can I incorporate it with a meal. Are there any exceptions that allow for this while trying to follow the one meal a day program.
2). I'm wondering if there are any concerns I should have about eating fruit and if its possible to eat too much of it, and how can I really know how much is too much.
I want to commend the both of you for inspiring me to get back to what I already knew was essential to optimal health, but as you know, some of us need a reminder now and then, and I thank you for providing that swift kick in the rear!

I get the feeling that not only did we the viewing audience get a lot out of it, but those who were in attendance and spoke seemed to have gotten great benefit from it, and I can tell from your expressions, it did wonders for you as well...I appreciate your efforts.
p.s. I need to especially thank you for bringing Min Kenneth Muhammad to this. As I told you before, I came in under the brother, but I didn't realize how wise he really was. I was young and immature when I entered, and I know realize that I should have been doing more listening than running my mouth. Unfortunately, I have been seriously poisoned by this devil and was far to foolish to recognize that at the time, so this show did a lot more for me than you may even realize. I promise you I will work hard on myself to never make that mistake ever again.

By all appearances, Noah Lottick of Kingston, Pa., had been a normal, happy 24-year-old who was looking for his place in the sun. On the day last June when his parents drove to New York City to obtain his body, they were nearly catatonic with grief.
 This young Russian-studies scholar had jumped from a 10th-floor window of the Milford Plaza Hotel and bounced off the hood of a stretch limousine. When the police arrived, his fingers were still clutching $171 in cash, virtually the only money he hadn't turned over to the Church of Scientology, the self-help "philosophy" group he had discovered just seven months earlier.
His death inspired his father Edward, a physician, to start his own investigation of the church. "We thought Scientology was something like Dale Carnegie," Lottick says. "I now believe it's a school for psychopaths." Their so-called therapies are manipulations. They take the best and the brightest people and destroy them." The Lotticks want to sue the church for contributing to their son's death, but the prospect has them frightened. For nearly 40 years, the big business of Scientology has shielded itself exquisitely behind the First Amendment as well as a battery of high-priced criminal lawyers and shady private detectives.
The Church of Scientology, started by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard to "clear" people of unhappiness, portrays itself as a religion. In reality the church is a hugely profitable global racket that survives by intimidating members and critics in a Mafia-like manner. At times during the past decade, prosecutions against Scientology seemed to be curbing its menace. Eleven top Scientologists, including Hubbard's wife, were sent to prison in the early 1980s for infiltrating, burglarizing and wiretapping more than 100 private and government agencies in attempts to block their investigations. In recent years hundreds of longtime Scientology adherents -- many charging that they were mentally of physically abused -- have quit the church and criticized it at their own risk. Some have sued the church and won; others have settled for amounts in excess of $500,000. In various cases judges have labeled the church "schizophrenic and paranoid" and "corrupt, sinister and dangerous."
Yet the outrage and litigation have failed to squelch Scientology. The group, which boasts 700 centers in 65 countries, threatens to become more insidious and pervasive than ever. Scientology is trying to go mainstream, a strategy that has sparked a renewed law- enforcement campaign against the church. Many of the group's followers have been accused of committing financial scams, while the church is busy attracting the unwary through a wide array of front groups in such businesses as publishing, consulting, health care and even remedial education.
In Hollywood, Scientology has assembled a star-studded roster of followers by aggressively recruiting and regally pampering them at the church's "Celebrity Centers," a chain of clubhouses that offer expensive counseling and career guidance. Adherents include screen idols Tom Cruise and John Travolta, actresses Kirstie Alley, Mimi Rogers, and Anne Archer, Palm Springs mayor and performer Sonny Bono, jazzman Chick Corea and even Nancy Cartwright, the voice of cartoon star Bart Simpson. Rank-and-file members, however, are dealt a less glamorous Scientology.
According to the Cult Awareness Network, whose 23 chapters monitor more than 200 "mind control" cults, no group prompts more telephone pleas for help than does Scientology. Says Cynthia Kisser, the network's Chicago-based executive director: "Scientology is quite likely the most ruthless, the most classically terroristic, the most litigious and the most lucrative cult the country has ever seen. No cult extracts more money from its members." [Note: since publication of this article, the Cult Awareness Network has been taken over by Scientology. Do not contact them!] Agrees Vicki Aznaran, who was one of Scientology's six key leaders until she bolted from the church in 1987: "This is a criminal organization, day in and day out. It makes Jim and Tammy [Bakker] look like kindergarten." To explore Scientology's reach, TIME conducted more than 150 interviews and reviewed hundreds of court records and internal Scientology documents. Church officials refused to be interviewed. The investigation paints a picture of a depraved yet thriving enterprise. Most cults fail to outlast their founder, but Scientology has prospered since Hubbard's death in 1986. In a court filing, one of the cult's many entities -- the Church of Spiritual Technology -- listed $503 million in income just for 1987. High-level defectors say the parent organization has squirreled away an estimated $400 million in bank accounts in Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Cyprus. Scientology probably has about 50,000 active members, far fewer than the 8 million the group claims. But in one sense, that inflated figure rings true: millions of people have been affected in one way or another by Hubbard's bizarre creation.
 Scientology is now run by David Miscavige, 31, a high school dropout and second-generation church member. Defectors describe him as cunning, ruthless and so paranoid about perceived enemies that he kept plastic wrap over his glass of water. His obsession is to obtain credibility for Scientology in the 1990s. Among other tactics, the group:
- Retains public relation powerhouse Hill and Knowlton to help shed the church's fringe-group image.
- Joined such household names as Sony and Pepsi as a main sponsor of Ted Turner's Goodwill Games.
- Buys massive quantities of its own books from retail stores to propel the titles onto best-seller lists.
- Runs full-page ads in such publications as Newsweek and Business Week that call Scientology a "philosophy," along with a plethora of TV ads touting the group's books.
- Recruits wealthy and respectable professionals through a web of consulting groups that typically hide their ties to Scientology.
The founder of this enterprise was part storyteller, part flimflam man. Born In Nebraska in 1911, Hubbard served in the Navy during World War II and soon afterward complained to the Veterans Administration about his "suicidal inclinations" and his "seriously affected" mind. Nevertheless, Hubbard was a moderately successful writer of pulp science fiction. Years later, church brochures described him falsely as an "extensively decorated" World War II hero who was crippled and blinded in action, twice pronounced dead and miraculously cured through Scientology. Hubbard's "doctorate" from "Sequoia University" was a fake mall-order degree. In a I984 case in which the church sued a Hubbard biographical researcher, a California judge concluded that its founder was "a pathological liar."
Hubbard wrote one of Scientology's sacred texts, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, in 1950. In it he introduced a crude psychotherapeutic technique he called "auditing." He also created a simplified lie detector (called an "E-meter") that was designed to measure electrical changes In the skin while subjects discussed intimate details of their past. Hubbard argued that unhappiness sprang from mental aberrations (or "engrams") caused by early traumas. Counseling sessions with the E-meter, he claimed, could knock out the engrams, cure blindness and even improve a person's intelligence and appearance.
Hubbard kept adding steps, each more costly, for his followers to climb. In the 1960s the guru decreed that humans are made of clusters of spirits (or "thetans") who were banished to earth some 75 million years ago by a cruel galactic ruler named Xenu. Naturally, those thetans had to be audited.
An Internal Revenue Service ruling in 1967 stripped Scientology's mother church of its tax-exempt status. A federal court ruled in 1971 that Hubbard's medical claims were bogus and that E-meter auditing could no longer be called a scientific treatment. Hubbard responded by going fully religious, seeking First Amendment protection for Scien- tology's strange rites. His counselors started sporting clerical collars. Chapels were built, franchises became "missions," fees became "fixed donations," and Hubbard's comic-book cosmology became "sacred scriptures.'
During the early 1970s, the IRS conducted its own auditing sessions and proved that Hubbard was skimming millions of dollars from the church, laundering the money through dummy corporations in Panama and stashing it in Swiss bank accounts. Moreover, church members stole IRS documents, filed false tax returns and harassed the agency's employees. By late 1985, with high-level defectors accusing Hubbard of having stolen as much as S200 million from the church, the IRS was seeking an indictment of Hubbard for tax fraud. Scientology members "worked day and night" shredding documents the IRS sought, according to defector Aznaran, who took part in the scheme. Hubbard, who had been in hiding for five years, died before the criminal case could be prosecuted.
Today the church invents costly new services with all the zeal of its founder. Scientology doctrine warns that even adherents who are "cleared" of engrams face grave spiritual dangers unless they are pushed to higher and more expensive levels. According to the church's latest price list, recruits -- "raw meat," as Hubbard called them -- take auditing sessions that cost as much as $1,000 an hour, or $12,500 for a 12 1/2-hour "intensive."
Psychiatrists say these sessions can produce a drugged-like, mind-controlled euphoria that keeps customers coming back for more. To pay their fees, newcomers can earn commissions by recruiting new mem- bers, become auditors themselves (Miscavige did so at age 12), or join the church staff and receive free counseling in exchange for what their written contracts describe as a "billion years" of labor. "Make sure that lots of bodies move through the shop," implored Hubbard in one of his bulletins to officials. "Make money. Make more money. Make others produce so as to make money . . . However you get them in or why, just do it."
 Harriet Baker learned the hard way about Scientology's business of selling religion. When Baker, 73, lost her husband to cancer, a Scientologist turned up at her Los Angeles home peddling a $1,300 auditing package to cure her grief. Some $15,000 later, the Scientologists discovered that her house was debt free. They arranged a $45,000 mortgage, which they pressured her to tap for more auditing until Baker's children helped their mother snap out of her daze. Last June, Baker demanded a $27,000 refund for unused services, prompting two cult members to show up at her door unannounced with an E-meter to interrogate her. Baker never got the money and, financially strapped, was forced to sell her house in September.
Before Noah Lottick killed himself, he had paid more than $5,000 for church counseling. His behavior had also become strange. He once remarked to his parents that his Scientology mentors could actually read minds. When his father suffered a major heart attack, Noah insisted that it was purely psychosomatic. Five days before he jumped, Noah burst into his parents' home and demanded to know why they were spreading "false rumors" about him -- a delusion that finally prompted his father to call a psychiatrist.
It was too late. "From Noah's friends at Dianetics" read the card that accompanied a bouquet of flowers at Lottick's funeral. Yet no Scientology staff members bothered to show up. A week earlier, local church officials had given Lottick's parents a red-carpet tour of their center. A cult leader told Noah's parents that their son had been at the church just hours before he disappeared -- but the church denied this story as soon as the body was identified. True to form, the cult even haggled with the Lotticks over $3,000 their son had paid for services he never used, insisting that Noah had intended it as a "donation."
The church has invented hundreds of goods and services for which members are urged to give "donations." Are you having trouble "moving swiftly up the Bridge" -- that is, advancing up the stepladder of en- lightenment? Then you can have your case reviewed for a mere $1,250 "donation." Want to know "why a thetan hangs on to the physical universe?" Try 52 of Hubbard's tape-recorded speeches from 1952, titled "Ron's Philadelphia Doctorate Course Lectures," for $2,525. Next: nine other series of the same sort. For the collector, gold-and-leather-bound editions of 22 of Hubbard's books (and bookends) on subjects ranging from Scientology ethics to radiation can be had for just $1,900.
To gain influence and lure richer, more sophisticated followers, Scientology has lately resorted to a wide array of front groups and financial scams. Among them:
- CONSULTING. Sterling Management Systems, formed in 1983, has been ranked in recent years by Inc. magazine as one of America's fastest-growing private companies (estimated 1988 revenues: $20 mil- lion). Sterling regularly mails a free newsletter to more than 300,000 health-care professionals, mostly dentists, promising to increase their incomes dramatically. The firm offers seminars and courses that typically cost $10,OOO. But Sterling's true aim is to hook customers for Scientology. "The church has a rotten product, so they package it as something else," says Peter Georgiades, a Pittsburgh attorney who represents Sterling victims. "It's a kind of bait and switch." Sterling's founder, dentist Gregory Hughes is now under investigation by California's Board of Dental Examiners for incompetence. Nine lawsuits are pending against him for malpractice (seven others have been settled), mostly for orthodontic work on children.
Many dentists who have unwittingly been drawn into the cult are filing or threatening lawsuits as well. Dentist Robert Geary of Medina, Ohio, who entered a Sterling seminar in 1988, endured "the most extreme high-pressure sales tactics I have ever faced." Sterling officials told Geary, 45, that their firm was not linked to Scientology, he says. but Geary claims they eventually convinced him that he and his wife Dorothy had personal problems that required auditing. Over five months, the Gearys say, they spent $130,000 for services, plus $50,000 for "gold-embossed, investment-grade" books signed by Hubbard. Geary contends that Scientologists not only called his bank to increase his credit card limit but also forged his signature on a $20,000 loan application. "It was insane," he recalls. "I couldn't even get an accounting from them of what I was paying for." At one point, the Gearys claim, Scientologists held Dorothy hostage for two weeks in a mountain cabin, after which she was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown.
 Last October, Sterling broke some bad news to another dentist, Glover Rowe of Gadsden, Ala., and his wife Dee. Tests showed that unless they signed up for auditing Glover's practice would fail, and Dee would someday abuse their child. The next month the Rowes flew to Glendale, Calif., where they shuttled daily from a local hotel to a Dianetics center. "We thought they were brilliant people because they seemed to know so much about us," recalls Dee. "Then we realized our hotel room must have been bugged." After bolting from the center, $23,000 poorer, the Rowes say, they were chased repeatedly by Scientologists on foot and in cars. Dentists aren't the only once at risk. Scientology also makes pitches to chiropractors, podiatrists and veterinarians.
- PUBLIC INFLUENCE. One front, the Way to Happiness Foundation, has distributed to children in thousands of the nation's public schools more than 3.5 million copies of a booklet Hubbard wrote on morality. The church calls the scheme "the largest dissemination project in Scientology history." Applied Scholastics is the name of still another front, which is attempting to install a Hubbard tutorial program in public schools, primarily those populated by minorities. The group also plans a 1,000 acre campus, where it will train educators to teach various Hubbard methods. The disingenuously named Citizens Commission on Human Rights is a Scientology group at war with psychiatry, its primary competitor. The commission typically issues reports aimed at discrediting particular psychiatrists and the field in general. The CCHR is also behind an all-out war against Eli Lilly, the maker of Prozac, the nation's top-selling antidepression drug. Despite scant evidence, the group's members -- who call themselves "psychbusters" -- claim that Prozac drives people to murder or suicide. Through mass mailings, appearances on talk shows and heavy lobbying, CCHR has hurt drug sales and helped spark dozens of lawsuits against Lilly.
Another Scientology linked group, the Concerned Businessmen's Association of America, holds antidrug contests and awards $5,000 grants to schools as a way to recruit students and curry favor with education officials. West Virginia Senator John D. Rockefeller IV unwittingly commended the CBAA in 1987 on the Senate floor. Last August author Alex Haley was the keynote speaker at its annual awards banquet in Los Angeles. Says Haley: "I didn't know much about that group going in. I'm a Methodist." Ignorance about Scientology can be embarrassing: two months ago, Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, noting that Scientology's founder "has solved the aberrations of the human mind," proclaimed March 13 "L. Ron Hubbard Day." He rescinded the proclamation in late March, once he Iearned who Hubbard really was.
- HEALTH CARE. HealthMed, a chain of clinics run by Scientologists, promotes a grueling and excessive system of saunas, exercise and vitamins designed by Hubbard to purify the body. Experts denounce the regime as quackery and potentially harmful, yet HealthMed solicits unions and public agencies for contracts. The chain is plugged heavily in a new book, Diet for a Poisoned Planet, by journalist David Steinman, who concludes that scores of common foods (among them: peanuts, bluefish, peaches and cottage cheese) are dangerous.
Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop labeled the book "trash," and the Food and Drug Administration issued a paper in October that claims Steinman distorts his facts. "HealthMed is a gateway to Scientology, and Steinman's book is a sorting mechanism," says physician William Jarvis, who is head of the National Council Against Health Fraud. Steinman, who describes Hubbard favorably as a "researcher," denies any ties to the church and contends, "HealthMed has no affiliation that I know of with Scientology."
- DRUG TREATMENT. Hubbard's purification treatments are the mainstay of Narconon, a Scientology-run chain of 33 alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers -- some in prisons under the name "Criminon" -- in 12 countries. Narconon, a classic vehicle for drawing addicts into the cult, now plans to open what it calls the world's largest treatment center, a 1,400-bed facility on an Indian reservation near Newkirk, Okla. (pop. 2,400. At a 1989 ceremony in Newkirk, the As- sociation for Better Living and Education presented Narconon a check for $200,000 and a study praising its work. The association turned out to be part of Scientology itself. Today the town is battling to keep out the cult, which has fought back through such tactics as sending private detectives to snoop on the mayor and the local newspaper publisher.
- FINANCIAL SCAMS. Three Florida Scientologists, including Ronald Bernstein, a big contributor to the church's international "war chest," pleaded guilty in March to using their rare-coin dealership as a money laundry. Other notorious activities by Scientologists include making the shady Vancouver stock exchange even shadier (see box) and plotting to plant operatives in the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Export-Import Bank of the U.S. The alleged purpose of this scheme: to gain inside information on which countries are going to be denied credit so that Scientology-linked traders can make illicit profits by taking "short" positions in those countries' currencies.
In the stock market the practice of "shorting" involves borrowing shares of publicly traded companies in the hope that the price will go down before the stocks must be bought on the market and returned to the lender. The Feshbach brothers of Palo Alto, Calif. -- Kurt, Joseph and Matthew - have become the leading short sellers in the U.S., with more than $500 million under management. The Feshbachs command a staff of about 60 employees and claim to have earned better returns than the Dow Jones industrial average for most of the 1980s. And, they say, they owe it all to the teachings of Scientology, whose "war chest" has received more than $1 million from the family.
The Feshbachs also embrace the church's tactics; the brothers are the terrors of the stock exchanges. In congressional hearings in 1989, the heads of several companies claimed that Feshbach operatives have spread false information to government agencies and posed in various guises -- such as a Securities and Exchange Commission official -- in an effort to discredit their companies and drive the stocks down. Michael Russell, who ran a chain of business journals, testified that a Feshbach employee called his bankers and interfered with his loans. Sometimes the Feshbachs send private detectives to dig up dirt on firms, which is then shared with business reporters, brokers and fund managers.
The Feshbachs, who wear jackets bearing the slogan "stock busters," insist they run a clean shop. But as part of a current probe into possible insider stock trading, federal officials are reportedly investigating whether the Feshbachs received confidential information from FDA employees. The brothers seem aligned with Scientology's war on psychiatry and medicine: many of their targets are health and bio- technology firms. ""Legitimate short selling performs a public service by deflating hyped stocks," says Robert Flaherty, the editor of Equities magazine and a harsh critic of the brothers. "But the Feshbachs have damaged scores of good start-ups."
Occasionally a Scientologist's business antics land him in jail. Last August a former devotee named Steven Fishman began serving a five-year prison term in Florida. His crime: stealing blank stock-confirmation slips from his employer, a major brokerage house, to use as proof that he owned stock entitling him to join dozens of successful class-action lawsuits. Fishman made roughly $1 million this way from 1983 to 1988 and spent as much as 30% of the loot on Scientology books and tapes.
Scientology denies any tie to the Fishman scam, a claim strongly disputed by both Fishman and his longtime psychiatrist, Uwe Geertz, a prominent Florida hypnotist. Both men claim that when arrested, Fishman was ordered by the church to kill Geertz and then do an "EOC," or end of cycle, which is church jargon for suicide.
- BOOK PUBLISHING. Scientology mischiefmaking has even moved to the book industry. Since 1985 at least a dozen Hubbard books, printed by a church company, have made best-seller lists. They range from a 5,000-page sci-fi decology (Black Genesis, The Enemy Within, An Alien Affair) to the 40-year-old Dianetics. In 1988 the trade publication Publishers Weekly awarded the dead author a plaque commemorating the appearance of Dianetics on its best-seller list for 100 consecutive weeks.
Critics pan most of Hubbard's books as unreadable, while defectors claim that church insiders are sometimes the real authors. Even so, Scientology has sent out armies of its followers to buy the group's books at such major chains as B. Dalton's and Waldenbooks to sustain the illusion of a best-selling author. A former Dalton's manager says that some books arrived in his store with the chain's price stickers already on them, suggesting that copies are being recycled. Scientology claims that sales of Hubbard books now top 90 million worldwide. The scheme, set up to gain converts and credibility, is coupled with a radio and TV advertising campaign virtually un- paralleled in the book industry.
Scientology devotes vast resources to squelching its critics. Since 1986 Hubbard and his church have been the subject of four unfriendly books, all released by small yet courageous publishers. In each case, the writers have been badgered and heavily sued. One of Hubbard's policies was that all perceived enemies are "fair game" and subject to being "tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed." Those who criticize the church journalists, doctors, lawyers and even judges often find themselves engulfed in litigation, stalked by private eyes, framed for fictional crimes, beaten up or threatened with death. Psychologist Margaret Singer, 69, an outspoken Scientology critic and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, now travels regularly under an assumed name to avoid harassment.
After the Los Angeles Times published a negative series on the church last summer, Scientologists spent an estimated $1 million to plaster the reporters' names on hundreds of billboards and bus placards across the city. Above their names were quotations taken out of context to portray the church in a positive light.
The church's most fearsome advocates are its lawyers. Hubbard warned his followers in writing to "beware of attorneys who tell you not to sue . . . the purpose of the suit is to harass and discourage rather than to win." Result: Scientology has brought hundreds of suits against its perceived enemies and today pays an estimated $20 million annually to more than 100 lawyers.
One legal goal of Scientology is to bankrupt the opposition or bury it under paper. The church has 71 active lawsuits against the IRS alone. One of them, Miscavige vs. IRS, has required the U.S. to pro- duce an index of 52,000 pages of documents. Boston attorney Michael Flynn, who helped Scientology victims from 1979 to 1987, personally endured 14 frivolous lawsuits, all of them dismissed. Another lawyer, Joseph Yanny, believes the church "has so subverted justice and the judicial system that it should be barred from seeking equity in any court." He should know: Yanny represented the cult until 1987, when, he says, he was asked to help church officials steal medical records to blackmail an opposing attorney (who was allegedly beaten up instead). Since Yanny quit representing the church, he has been the target of death threats, burglaries, lawsuits and other harassment.
Scientology's critics contend that the U.S. needs to crack down on the church in a major, organized way. "I want to know, Where is our government?" demands Toby Plevin, a Los Angeles attorney who handles victims. "It shouldn't be left to private litigators, because God knows most of us are afraid to get involved." But law-enforcement agents are also wary. "Every investigator is very cautious, walking on eggshells when it comes to the church," says a Florida police detective who has tracked the cult since 1988. "It will take a federal effort with lots of money and manpower."
So far the agency giving Scientology the most grief is the IRS, whose officials have implied that Hubbard's successors may be looting the church's coffers. Since 1988, when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the revocation of the cult's tax-exempt status, a massive IRS probe of church centers across the country has been under way. An IRS agent, Marcus Owens, has estimated that thousands of IRS employees have been involved. Another agent, in an internal IRS memorandum, spoke hopefully of the "ultimate disintegration" of the church. A small but helpful beacon shone last June when a federal appeals court ruled that two cassette tapes featuring conversations between church officials and their lawyers are evidence of a plan to commit "future frauds" against the IRS.
The IRS and FBI have been debriefing Scientology defectors for the past three years, in part to gain evidence for a major racketeering case that appears to have stalled last summer. Federal agents complain that the Justice Department is unwilling to spend the money needed to endure a drawn-out war with Scientology or to fend off the cult's notorious jihads against individual agents. "In my opinion the church has one of the most effective intelligence operations in the U.S., rivaling even that of the FBI," says Ted Gunderson, a former head of the FBI's Los Angeles office.
Foreign governments have been moving even more vigorously against the organization. In Canada the church and nine of its members will be tried in June on charges of stealing government documents (many of them retrieved in an enormous police raid of the church's Toronto headquarters). Scientology proposed to give $1 million to the needy if the case was dropped, but Canada spurned the offer. Since 1986 authorities in France, Spain and Italy have raided more than 50 Scien- tology centers. Pending charges against more than 100 of its overseas church members include fraud, extortion, capital flight, coercion, illegally practicing medicine and taking advantage of mentally incapacitated people. In Germany last month, leading politicians accused the cult of trying to infiltrate a major party as well as launching an immense recruitment drive in the east.
Sometimes even the church's biggest zealots can use a little protection. Screen star Travolta, 37, has long served as an unofficial Scientology spokesman, even though he told a magazine in 1983 that he was opposed to the church's management. High-level defectors claim that Travolta has long feared that if he defected, details of his sexual life would be made public. "He felt pretty intimidated about this getting out and told me so," recalls William Franks, the church's former chairman of the board. "There were no outright threats made, but it was implicit. If you leave, they immediately start digging up everything." Franks was driven out in 1981 after attempting to reform the church.
The church's former head of security, Richard Aznaran, recalls Scientology ringleader Miscavige repeatedly joking to staffers about Travolta's allegedly promiscuous homosexual behavior. At this point any threat to expose Travolta seems superfluous: last May a male porn star collected $100,000 from a tabloid for an account of his alleged two-year liaison with the celebrity. Travolta refuses to comment, and in December his lawyer dismissed questions about the subject as "bizarre." Two weeks later, Travolta announced that he was getting married to actress Kelly Preston, a fellow Scientologist.
Shortly after Hubbard's death the church retained Trout & Ries, a respected, Connecticut-based firm of marketing consultants, to help boost its public image. "We were brutally honest," says Jack Trout. "We advised them to clean up their act, stop with the controversy and even to stop being a church. They didn't want to hear that." Instead, Scientology hired one of the country's largest p.r. outfits, Hill and Knowlton, whose executives refuse to discuss the lucrative relationship. "Hill and Knowlton must feel that these guys are not totally off the wall," says Trout. "Unless it's just for the money." One of Scientology's main strategies is to keep advancing the tired argument that the church is being "persecuted" by antireligionists. It is supported in that position by the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Council of Churches. But in the end, money is what Scientology is all about. As long as the organization's opponents and victims are successfully squelched, Scientology's managers and lawyers will keep pocketing millions of dollars by helping it achieve its ends.

One source of funds for the Los Angeles-based church is the notorious, self-regulated stock exchange in Vancouver, British Columbia, often called the scam capital of the world. The exchange's 2,300 penny-stock listings account for $4 billion in annual trading. Local journalists and insiders claim the vast majority range from total washouts to outright frauds.
Two Scientologists who operate there are Kenneth Gerbino and Michael Baybak, 20-year church veterans from Beverly Hills who are major donors to the cult. Gerbino, 45, is a money manager, marketmaker and publisher of a national financial newsletter. He has boasted in Scientology journals that he owes all his stock-picking success to L. Ron Hubbard. That's not saying much: Gerbino's newsletter picks since 1985 have cumulatively returned 24%, while the Dow Jones industrial average has more than doubled. Nevertheless Gerbino's short-term gains can be stupendous. A survey last October found Gerbino to be the only manager who made money in the third quarter of 1990, thanks to gold and other resource stocks. For the first quarter of 1991, Gerbino was dead last. Baybak, 49, who runs a public relations company staffed with Scientologists, apparently has no ethics problem with engineering a hostile takeover of a firm he is hired to promote.
Neither man agreed to be interviewed for this story, yet both threatened legal action through attorneys. "What these guys do is take over companies, hype the stock, sell their shares, and then there's nothing left," says John Campbell, a former securities lawyer who was a director of mining company Athena Gold until Baybak and Gerbino took it over.
The pattern has become familiar. The pair promoted a mining venture called Skylark Resources, whose stock traded at nearly $4 a share in 1987. The outfit soon crashed, and the stock is around 2 cents. NETI Technologies, a software company, was trumpeted in the press as "the next Xerox" and in 1984 rose to a market value of $120 million with Baybak's help. The company, which later collapsed, was delisted two months ago by the Vancouver exchange.
Baybak appeared in 1989 at the helm of Wall Street Ventures, a start-up that announced it owned 35 tons of rare Middle Eastern postage stamps -- worth $100 million -- and was buying the world's largest collection of southern Arabian stamps (worth $350 million). Steven C. Rockefeller Jr. of the oil family and former hockey star Denis Potvin joined the company in top posts, but both say they quit when they realized the stamps were virtually worthless. "The stamps were created by sand-dune nations to exploit collectors," says Michael Laurence, editor of Linn's Stamp News, America's largest stamp journal. After the stock topped $6, it began a steady descent, with Baybak unloading his shares along the way. Today it trades at 18 cents.
Athena Gold, the current object of Baybak's and Gerbino's attentions, was founded by entrepreneur William Jordan. He turned to an established Vancouver broker in 1987 to help finance the company, a 4,500-acre mining property near Reno. The broker promised to raise more than $3 million and soon brought Baybak and Gerbino into the deal. Jordan never got most of the money, but the cult members ended up with a good deal of cheap stock and options. Next they elected directors who were friendly to them and set in motion a series of complex maneuvers to block Jordan from voting stock he controlled and to run him out of the company. "I've been an honest policeman all my life and I've seen the worst kinds of crimes, and this ranks high," says former Athena shareholder Thomas Clark, a 20-year veteran of Reno's police force who has teamed up with Jordan to try to get the gold mine back. "They stole this man's property."
With Baybak as chairman, the two Scientologists and their staffs are promoting Athena, not always accurately. A letter to shareholders with the 1990 annual report claims Placer Dome, one of America's largest gold-mining firms, has committed at least $25.5 million to develop the mine. That's news to Placer Dome. "There is no pre-commitment," says Placer executive Cole McFarland. "We're not going to spend that money unless survey results justify the expenditure."
Baybak's firm represented Western Resource Technologies, a Houston oil-and-gas company, but got the boot in October. Laughs Steven McGuire, president of Western Resource: "His is a p.r. firm in need of a p.r. firm." But McGuire cannot laugh too freely. Baybak and other Scientologists, including the estate of L. Ron Hubbard, still control huge blocks of his company's stock.

Scientology makes its presence felt in Europe and Canada

In the 1960s and '70s, L. Ron Hubbard used to periodically fill a converted ferry ship with adoring acolytes and sail off to spread the word. One by one, countries -- Britain, Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Venezuela -- closed their ports, usually because of a public outcry. At one point, a court in Australia revoked the church's status as a religion; at another, a French court convicted Hubbard of fraud in absentia.
Today Hubbard's minions continue to wreak global havoc, costing governments considerable effort and money to try to stop them. In Italy a two-year trial of 76 Scientologists, among them the former leader of the church's Italian operations, is nearing completion in Milan. Two weeks ago, prosecutor Pietro Forno requested jail terms for all the defendants who are accused of extortion, cheating "mentally incapacitated" people and evading as much as $50 million in taxes. "All of the trial's victims went to Scientology in search of a cure or a better life," said Forno, "But the Scientologists were amateur psychiatrists who practiced psychological terrorism". For some victims, he added, "the intervention of the Scientologists was devastating."
The Milan case was triggered by parents complaining to officials that Scientology had a financial stranglehold on their children, who had joined the church or entered Narconon, its drug rehabilitation unit. In 1986 Treasury and paramilitary police conducted raids in 20 cities across Italy shutting down 27 Scientology centers and seizing 100,000 documents. To defend itself in the trial, the cult has retained some of Italy's most famous lawyers.
In Canada, Scientology is using a legal team that includes Clayton Ruby, one of the country's foremost civil rights lawyers, to defend itself and nine of its members who are to stand trial in June in Toronto. The charges: stealing documents concerning Scientology from the Ministry of the Attorney General, the Canadian Mental Health Association, two police forces and other institutions. The case stems from a 1983 surprise raid of the church's Toronto headquarters by more than 100 policemen, who had arrived in three chartered buses; some 2 million pages of documents were seized over a two-day period. Ruby, whose legal maneuvers delayed the case for years, is trying to get it dismissed because of "unreasonable delay."
Spain's Justice Ministry has twice denied Scientology status as a religion, but that has not slowed the church' s expansion. In 1989 the Ministry of Health issued a report calling the sect "totalitarian" and "pure and simple charlatanism." The year before, the authorities had raided 26 church centers, with the result that 11 Scientologists stand accused of falsification of records, coercion and capital flight. "The real god of this organization is money," said Madrid examining magistrate Jose Maria Vasquez Honrnbia, before referring the case to a higher court because it was too complex for his jurisdiction. Eugene Ingram, a private investigator working for Scientology claims he helped get Honrubia removed from the case for leaking nonpublic documents to the press.
In France it took a death to spur the government into action: 16 Scientologists were indicted last year for fraud and "complicity in the practice of illegal medicine" following the suicide of an industrial designer in Lyon. In the victim's house investigators found medication allegeally provided to him by the church without doctor's prescription. Among those charged in the case is the president of Scientology's French operations and the head of the Paris-based Celebrity Centre, which caters to famous members.
Outside the U.S., Scientology appears to be most active in Germany where the attorney general of the state of Bavaria has branded the cult "distinctly totalitarian" and aimed at "the economic exploitation of customers who are in bondage to it." In 1984 nearly 100 police raided the church in Munich. At the time, city officials were reportedly collaborating with U.S. tax inspectors and trying to prove that the cult was actually a profitmaking business. More recently, Hamburg state authorities moved to rescind Scientology's tax reduced status, while members of parliament are seeking criminal proceedings. In another domain, church linked management consulting firms have infiltrated small and middle sized companies throughout Germany, according to an expose published this month in the newsmagazine DER SPIEGEL; the consultants, who typically hide their ties to Scientology, indoctrinate employees by using Hubbard's methods. A German anticult organization estimates that Scientology has at least 60 fronts or splinter groups operating in the country. German politics appears as well to attract Hubbard's zealots. In March the Free Democrats, partners in Chancellor Helmut Kohl' s ruling coalition in Bonn, accused Scientology of trying to infiltrate their Hamburg branch. Meanwhile the main opposition party, the Social Democrats, has been warning its members in the formerly com- munist eastern part of the country against exploitation by the church. Even federal officials are being used by the church: one Scientology front group sent copies of a Hubbard written pamphlet on moral values to members of the Bundestag. The Office of Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher unwittingly endorsed the Scientologists' message: "Indeed, the world would be a more beautiful place if the principles formulated in the pamphlet, a life characterized by reason and responsibility, would find wider attention."

Strange things seem to happen to people who write about Scientology. Journalist Paulette Cooper wrote a critical book on the cult in 1971. This led to a Scientology plot (called Operation Freak-Out) whose goal, according to church documents, was "to get P.C. incarcerated in a mental institution or jail." It almost worked: by impersonating Cooper, Scientologists got her indicted in 1973 for threatening to bomb the church. Cooper, who also endured 19 lawsuits by the church, was finally exonerated in 1977 after FBI raids on the church offices in Los Angeles and Washington uncovered documents from the bomb scheme. No Scientologists were ever tried in the matter.
For the TIME story, at least 10 attorneys and six private detectives were unleashed by Scientology and its followers in an effort to threaten, harass and discredit me. Last Oct. 12, not long after I began this assignment, I planned to lunch with Eugene Ingram, the church's leading private eye and a former cop. Ingram, who was tossed off the Los Angeles police force In 1981 for alleged ties to prostitutes and drug dealers, had told me that he might be able to arrange a meeting with church boss David Miscavige. Just hours before the lunch, the church's "national trial counsel," Earle Cooley, called to inform me that I would be eating alone.
 Alone, perhaps, but not forgotten. By day's end, I later learned, a copy of my personal credit report -- with detailed information about my bank accounts, home mortgage, credit-card payments, home address and Social Security number -- had been illegally retrieved from a national credit bureau called Trans Union. The sham company that received it, "Educational Funding Services" of Los Angeles, gave as its address a mail drop a few blocks from Scientology's headquarters. The owner of the mail drop is a private eye named Fred Wolfson, who admits that an Ingram associate retained him to retrieve credit reports on several individuals. Wolfson says he was told that Scientology's attorneys "had judgments against these people and were trying to collect on them." He says now, "These are vicious people. These are vipers." Ingram, through a lawyer, denies any involvement in the scam.
During the past five months, private investigators have been contacting acquaintances of mine, ranging from neighbors to a former colleague, to inquire about subjects such as my health (like my credit rating, it's excellent) and whether I've ever had trouble with the IRS (unlike Scientology, I haven't). One neighbor was greeted at dawn outside my Manhattan apartment building by two men who wanted to know whether I lived there. I finally called Cooley to demand that Scientology stop the nonsense. He promised to look into it.
After that, however, an attorney subpoenaed me, while another falsely suggested that I might own shares in a company I was reporting about that had been taken over by Scientologists (he also threatened to contact the Securities and Exchange Commission). A close friend in Los Angeles received a disturbing telephone call from a Scientology staff member seeking data about me -- an indication that the cult may have illegally obtained my personal phone records. Two detectives contacted me, posing as a friend and a relative of a so-called cult victim, to elicit negative statements from me about Scientology. Some of my conversations with them were taped, transcribed and presented by the church in affidavits to TIME's lawyers as "proof" of my bias against Scientology.
Among the comments I made to one of the detectives, who represented himself as "Harry Baxter," a friend of the victim's family, was that "the church trains people to lie." Baxter and his colleagues are hardly in a position to dispute that observation. His real name is Barry Silvers, and he is a former investigator for the Justice Department's Organized Crime Strike Force. (RB)
